Union Jack Flag for a Flagpole: Get the Size and Fit Right

A flag that's too small looks lost at the top of a pole; too big and it wraps and shreds. Here's which size fits which pole, how to mount a grommeted flag, and the detail most people miss — which way up it goes.

Match the flag to the pole, not the other way round. The rule of thumb: the flag's length should be roughly a quarter to a third of the pole's visible height — enough to read clearly without fouling the pole or the wall.

Fitting a grommeted flag in under a minute

  1. Top grommet first. Clip it to the upper fastener on your halyard, or thread a cable tie / ring hook through if your pole has no clips.
  2. Bottom grommet second. Attach it to the lower fastener with light tension so the hoist edge sits straight against the pole.
  3. Hoist and check the corner. Before you tie off, look at the top corner nearest the pole: the broad white diagonal must be above the red one. Thin white stripe on top means it's upside down — historically a distress signal.

That last check takes two seconds and saves the most common flag mistake in Britain. Once it's up, the double-stitched hems and 68D polyester are built to take real weather.

Flagpole questions, answered

What size union jack suits a 5–6ft wall-mounted pole?

3ft x 2ft — the size we sell. It fills a 5–6ft angled house pole properly without drooping over the bracket, and the two metal grommets fit straight onto standard pole clips.

Which way up does a Union Jack go?

On the half nearest the pole, the broad white diagonal must sit above the red diagonal in the top corner. If the thin white edge is on top at the hoist, the flag is upside down — historically a distress signal.

How do grommets attach to a flagpole?

Clip the top grommet to the halyard's upper clip or hook, the bottom grommet to the lower one, then hoist. On a simple house pole without clips, cable ties or ring hooks through each grommet work just as well.

Will a grommeted flag fit a rope-and-toggle pole?

Traditional rope-and-toggle poles are designed for sleeved flags, but a grommeted flag attaches fine with two small carabiners or ties between the grommets and the rope. For clip-style domestic poles — the most common kind — grommets are the standard fitting.

Will it cope with British weather on a pole all year?

The 68D polyester and double-stitched hems are made for outdoor flying. Like any flag flown daily, it will weather over time — at £4.99 it's easy to keep a fresh spare, which is exactly what most flagpole owners do.
